Kinja'd!!!

For the presentation of the next generation car of a student team I used to be a member of I needed to be in the old industrial area of Eindhoven.

Since a couple of years former Philips factories there have been converted to offices for companies and artists, as well as a music venue. All this while retaining the industrial look on the outside.

I have wanted to shoot my/a car in this spot for a while, the rooftop of a parking garage that was even used by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . However, since today was more of a coincidence I hadn’t brought my proper camera and had to make do with my phone. The fact that the sunlight was coming from another angle than I wanted sure didn’t help, so I think these photos are more of a location scout thing, than proper shots.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I’d say that apart from the light and gear issues the scouting was successful, I’ll definitely return here.

As a bonus a few shots of the car that was being unveiled:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The car is called Lina, and is made largely out of bio-degradable flax fibres, and is driven by 2 electric motors. It uses the same modular triple battery setup as Nova, which was it’s predecessor that was built partially by me.

Bonus typical Eindhoven content:

A DAF 33!

I know it is basically a Clio light, but it’s a proper Twingo in spirit. It’s simple, it slow car fast, and it has got a few original Twingo design hints. It’s also definitely more Twingo than the stretched Smart that they call a Twingo nowadays.

Hear, hear!

I am sure Twingo IIs and IIIs are very nice, competent cars (and Gen III is a bit of a curio, being rear-engined and all), but there is only one real Twingo. Yes, the one whose body looks suspiciously like a Polish design by FSM!

This is what happens when marketing departments are lazy or plain stupid. I love Fiat’s new Panda, but it is not a patch on the first Panda. Fiat had already everything lined up to call it Gingo (allegedly, even printed brochures) when Renault protested arguing it sounded too similar to... Twingo!

And down the drain went one of the most wonderful names ever given to a small car.

From a distance yes, but up close it had quite some spots in which it was touched up by hand with a slightly different shade of yellow. Also the paint was quite faded, and some rust issues around the panel edges were present. 10/10 would drive though.

Agreed. It’s always as quiet over there?

Hah, I had seen an article about that this morning over on Green Car Congress.

One concern I have with using PLA in a car like that (the press release at least says there’s PLA in there)... how does it hold up to high temperatures (which it could be exposed to, I’d assume)? IIRC, PLA breaks down at like 60 C...

That is a very good point. The PLA is used as a sandwiched core material in the chassis construction. So while it will not get hot as easily as the body panels, the chances still exist of it getting hot, especially near the power train components. I’ll ask the guys if they thought about that when I see them.

It’s quite a tall parking structure with 5 levels, so I think it only fills up when there is a large event or concert in the Klokgebouw. Today only level 0 up to 2 were filled, with 2 being about half full. Also with light facing the buildings it will be relatively quiet anyway, because according to my sun position tool that is between 6 and 10 in the morning. After that it’s either shooting into the sun, or the sun is blocked by a tower they are building next to it.

A Pao and/or Be-1 would look great on it, haha. ;-)

Seriously, I think the retro-ness of those cars would really pop against the pre-war industrial background.
